Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has assumed direct control over the proposed Charedi draft bill initially advanced by Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chair Yuli Edelstein, according to a report by Haaretz citing a United Torah Judaism source.
The development follows the announcement by UTJ’s Degel HaTorah faction that its members would be stepping down from the Knesset this evening, accusing Edelstein of failing to provide them with the bill’s text.
Netanyahu has reportedly held extended discussions with Edelstein throughout the day, and according to Haaretz, issued an ultimatum: either Edelstein delivers the softened version of the bill that Netanyahu had pledged to the Charedi parties last month, just before the outbreak of war with Iran, or he will be dismissed.
