Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Thursday that military triumph over Hamas is the overriding goal in Gaza, above the return of Israeli hostages.
Speaking at the Independence Day Bible Contest in Yerushalayim, Netanyahu said, “We want to bring all our hostages home. We’ve so far brought back 147 alive, and 196 total.”
“There are another up to 24 alive, 59 total, and we want to return the living and the dead,” he continued, but emphasized: “The war has a supreme goal, and the supreme goal is victory over our enemies, and this we will achieve.”
Previously, Netanyahu framed the war’s aims as dismantling Hamas, rescuing all hostages, and preventing future threats from Gaza as equally important. His latest comments aligned with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s recent controversial remark that “the hostages are not the most important thing.”
Hostage families, organized under the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, condemned Netanyahu’s position, stating: “The majority of the Israeli public… wants the return of all the hostages before anything else.” They described the captives’ return as “the supreme goal that should be guiding Israel’s government.”
