The Air traffic control alerted the Black Hawk helicopter to the presence of an American Airlines plane twice before the fatal crash in Washington DC, Washington Post reports. The first warning was given at least two minutes prior to the collision.
According to radio transmissions reviewed by aviation experts, a soldier on the Black Hawk requested “visual separation” to maintain a safe distance from the plane, which was visible to the helicopter crew. Air traffic control approved this request both times.
The helicopter and passenger plane collided at 8:48 PM, just 12 seconds after the second alert from air traffic control.
