Ofer Calderon, released from Hamas terrorist captivity two weeks ago, was forced to eat rotten vegetables in order to fatten him up before being freed, his uncle told the Israeli Knesset’s health committee Monday .

Ofer, 54 years old, had lost 55 pounds at one point when held by the terrorists, but once Hamas decided it would release him as part of the ceasefire and hostage deal, the captors started feeding him large amounts of food, including rotten vegetables, so he would not appear as malnourished and emaciated as he truly was.

After being released from the hospital, Ofer returned due to pneumonia and a severe flu.

“Ofer had a difficult week, starting with a severe flu and pneumonia, to the point that his children could not meet him,” his uncle tells the committee, according to the Times of Israel.

“Ofer said that three months ago, he weighed 25 kilograms (55 pounds) less,” he says. “When [Hamas] realized that Ofer would be among those who were freed, they fattened him so he would look the way he did.”
