One of the final Jewish residents of Yemen has made aliyah to Israel, according to Ynet.
The news outlet reported that Badra Ben Youssef departed Yemen in June, one year after the passing of her husband, Yahya. Citing a local source, the outlet noted that the couple had no children and that Yahya was buried by Muslim neighbors.
According to the report, only four Jews remain in Yemen today. One of them has been imprisoned since late 2015 on charges related to allegedly attempting to “smuggle” a Sefer Torah into Israel.
Jews have lived in Yemen at least since the destruction of the first Beis Hamikdash.
Nearly 49,000 Jews from Yemen were brought to Israel as part of Operation Magic Carpet between 1949 and 1950. The Israeli government attempted to forcibly secularize the deeply religious population.
