Jewish community organizations in NYC have urged the City University of New York’s chancellor to take decisive action after protesters targeted the Jewish representative at an interfaith gathering on campus last month.

At the City College of New York event, a Muslim leader staged a walkout in protest of a Hillel director who was present as the Jewish community’s representative.

During the disruption, the Muslim leader accused Hillel director Ilya Bratman of responsibility for suffering in Gaza and led attendees out of the room, prompting backlash from Jewish organizations and elected officials across the city.

In a letter to CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, Jewish leaders denounce the walkout as “outrageous” and discriminatory, saying the university’s response has been insufficient.

They write that the incident and the administration’s handling of it “send a clear message to Jewish and Zionist students at CUNY: you do not belong here.”

The letter, dated Monday and shared with The Times of Israel, was signed by New York City Councilmember Eric Dinowitz; Mark Treyger of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York; UJA-Federation CEO Eric Goldstein; ADL regional director Scott Richman; Miriam F. Elman of the Academic Engagement Network; and Josh Kramer of the American Jewish Committee in New York.

Dinowitz, who leads both the city council’s higher education committee and its Jewish caucus, joined the other signatories in urging reforms.

“Against the backdrop of this shameful incident and rising antisemitism on campus, we urge CUNY to take steps to amend its student code of conduct,” the letter states, calling for a “system-wide policy” to protect Jewish students throughout the university network.

CUNY is under federal investigation for allegedly permitting antisemitism to run rampant in its schools among both students and faculty.
