Antwerp’s Jewish community is reeling after Belgian police carried out pre-dawn raids on the homes of two respected mohelim early Wednesday morning, confiscating their knives and demanding lists of children who underwent Milah over the past year.
Law enforcement officers arrived early in the morning at the homes of Rabbi Aharon Eckstein and Rabbi Moshe David Landau, both well-known mohelim in the Antwerp community. Witnesses reported that police banged on the doors and threatened: “Either you open the door or we’ll break in.”
Authorities presented court-issued search warrants, proceeded to confiscate the knives, and demanded detailed records of all Brisos performed in the past year.
This unprecedented and deeply disturbing action comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed over a year ago, challenging the mitzvah of Milah. The complainant is reportedly a controversial figure known for prior confrontations with Jewish institutions across Europe.
Even more shocking, the suit has since broadened to include not only the mohelim themselves but also prominent Rabbanim who served as kvatters or sandekim during the Brisos. These include figures such as the Peshchevorsker Rebbe and the Chief Rabbi Harav David Moshe Lieberman, zt”l.
The European Jewish Association (EJA) condemned the raids in the strongest terms. Its chairman, Rabbi Menachem Margolin, stated: “This is a clear warning to Belgian Jews and the Belgian government. Religious freedom must be preserved! The slightest prohibition on circumcision in Belgium will send a clear signal to Belgian Jews that they are not welcome in the country.”
Rabbi Margolin called on Belgian authorities to enact urgent legislation recognizing Milah as a protected religious practice under national and European law.
This alarming episode follows earlier legislative measures in Belgium that targeted shechita, signaling a concerning trend for Torah Jewry.
