Last Tuesday, the exterior wall of San Jose’s main shul, which serves most of the Jewish population of Costa Rica, was defaced with graffiti targeting Israel and Jews, Mako reported Thursday. The incident coincided with the country’s Independence Day.

According to the report, Mia Pergala, an Israeli student originally from San Jose, was among the first to encounter the vandalism. She noted that cases of anti-Semitism in the area have been increasingly noticeable in recent weeks.

Pergala, who emigrated from San Jose to Israel in 2019 to join the IDF, currently studies communications at Reichman University. While she had not planned to remain in Israel after her military service, she decided to settle there. She returns to Costa Rica annually to visit her family.

During her current visit, Pergala learned that the main shul, serving a Jewish community of roughly 3,000 people, had been vandalized with offensive graffiti.

In a statement accompanying published photos, the Costa Rican Movement for Solidarity with Palestine wrote: “This is how the Israeli-Zionist Center was awakened in Costa Rica.”

As of now, the shul has not issued a public statement about the vandalism, and no investigation has been reported regarding the identity of the perpetrators.
