PA President Abbas Appoints Successor

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, 89, whose health continues to deteriorate, has appointed his longtime aide and confidant Hussein al-Sheikh as Vice President and Deputy Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), positioning him as the leading candidate to succeed Abbas.
Al-Sheikh, a seasoned Fatah veteran and Abbas’s key negotiator, is widely regarded as a practical figure in Palestinian politics, known for maintaining dialogue with Israel, earning him favor among Israeli officials.
The appointment comes after years of Abbas resisting calls for reform within the PLO, a decision now seen as timely with the U.S. and Gulf states pressing for new leadership to spearhead Gaza’s reconstruction.
Al-Sheikh has represented Abbas in global talks with Gulf Arab nations and the U.S. Earlier this year, he met with President Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, in Saudi Arabia.
Abbas also issued his strongest call yet for Hamas to disarm and allow the Palestinian Authority (PA) to assume control of Gaza.
He spent 11 years in Israeli prisons from 1978 to 1989,
