Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is reportedly planning to retire after her current term, with Democrats preparing for an announcement following Tuesday’s elections, according to multiple party sources cited by NBC News.

The 85-year-old lawmaker, who twice served as Speaker of the House, would conclude nearly 40 years representing San Francisco if she follows through with the decision.

Pelosi has fueled speculation by not discouraging potential successors, including state Sen. Scott Wiener and former tech executive Saikat Chakrabarti, despite having millions in campaign funds still on hand.

Colleagues say Pelosi has hinted at her intentions, joking that she hopes to watch Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., become the first Black House speaker “if she’s still allowed on the floor.”

Her spokesperson, Ian Krager, declined to confirm her retirement, saying Pelosi remains “fully focused” on promoting Proposition 50 — a partisan redistricting measure Democrats believe is essential to regaining the House majority.

Speaking to the San Francisco Examiner, Pelosi called the initiative “the best antidote to poison,” apparently referring to Republican-led redistricting efforts in states such as Texas that have challenged President Donald Trump’s policies.
