Former United Torah Judaism MK Rabbi Yitzchak Pindrus rejected party leader Rabbi Yitzchak Goldknopf’s recent remarks downplaying the pain of non-Charedi Jews serving in the IDF.
“I cannot accept these words,” said Pindrus, whose party resigned last week from the Knesset over the government’s failures to deliver a promised draft law. “It’s not just me, I’ve been receiving calls since this morning from important rabbis and people who are hurt. It’s the most elementary thing to identify with [their] pain, even if we have an ideological debate, even if there are legitimate discussions — but I am not willing to accept these things, the Charedi public is not willing to accept these things,” he told Kan.
Pindrus emphasized that the broader Charedi community is pained by the suffering of IDF families and appreciates their service. “I don’t know why [Goldknopf] expressed himself like that. I don’t speak for him, but I am expressing my opinion as someone who grew up and knows our sector, and I have also received calls from very important rabbis and community leaders who think [like me].”
Pindrus is affiliated with the Degel HaTorah wing of UTJ, while Goldknopf leads the Agudas Yisrael faction. Goldknopf made his controversial remarks in an interview with *Makor Rishon*, saying he did not relate to the suffering of those who serve in the military: “Don’t bring me your pains and pass them on to me. Let’s decide that everybody has their own burden,” he said.
According to *Behadrei Haredim*, Pindrus’ public response was issued under the direction of Hagaon Harav Moshe Hillel Hirsch shlita, rosh yeshiva of Slabodka in Bnei Brak and spiritual leader of Degel.
