Police arrested a man in Boro Park over the weekend for pretending to be a cop after he tried to pull over a Shmira member.
The incident occurred in the heart of Boro Park at the intersection of 47th Street and 18th Avenue, when the suspect, whose car was decked out with illegal red and blue lights, attempted his ruse.
The Shmira volunteer recognized some suspicious behavior and called for assistance on his radio. Shmira members arrived shortly after and apprehended the suspect before NYPD officers of the 66th precinct made the arrest.
Evidence gathered by police and Shmira point to the suspect having carried out traffic stops, posing as a detective, and robbing victims by seizing their valuables.
Illegal aliens appear to have been his main target.
Despite the suspect’s attempt to conceal evidence, Shmira patrol members and the NYPD successfully recovered incriminating materials from the vehicle, leading to his arrest. Among the items discovered were 15 cell phones, police-style emergency lights, a fraudulent police business card, and other evidence suggesting additional charges may follow.
