As the ceasefire in Gaza takes effect and the hostage exchange deal continues in phases, Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi announces his resignation, effective in less than two months, on March 6, 2025.

In a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yisrael Katz, Halevi explained that his resignation comes in the wake of the failures during the October 7th events, stating, “The responsibility for the terrible failure weighs on me every day, every hour, and will continue to do so for the rest of my life.”

Nevertheless, Halevi acknowledged the significant military achievements of the Israel Defense Forces, saying, “The IDF’s achievements have changed the Middle East. The IDF inflicted heavy damage on Hamas’s military wing, created the conditions for the return of hostages, caused unprecedented damage to the Hezbollah terror organization, and significantly weakened Iran and its regional operations.”

The change in the Chief of Staff position is expected to cause a political and military upheaval. First, a new Chief of Staff must be selected, which is likely to lead to disputes within the coalition. Additionally, there will be pressure from the opposition, arguing that following the resignation of the Chief of Staff, Prime Minister Netanyahu should also resign due to the failures of October 7th.
