A new HarrisX poll released Tuesday revealed that Former Governor Andrew Cuomo would tie with antisemitic communist Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani and Republican Curtis Sliwa if incumbent Mayor Eric Adams bows out of the election.
The poll, conducted online between July 7th and 8th among 585 registered New York City voters, features several election scenarios.
As the race stands with four main competitors – Cuomo, Mamdani, Adams and Sliwa – Mamdani has a slight edge at 26% to Cuomo’s 23%, though the lead falls within the margin of error. Republican Curtis Sliwa received 22%. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams trails at 13%, with 15% percent of voters still undecided.
Mamdani won the Democratic primary last month, defeating Cuomo, who, like Adams, is running as an Independent.
Without Adams, Cuomo pulls ahead at 31% to Mamdani’s 29% and Sliwa’s 28%, though all three are within the margin of error.
However, Mamdani shows a clear advantage in a scenario without Cuomo, leading by 10 percentage points with 35% support, compared to Sliwa’s 25% and Adams’ 19%.
The poll also explored head-to-head matchups, yielding significant insights. Mamdani leads Mayor Adams 43% to 36%, indicating a potential vulnerability for the incumbent. Conversely, when pitted against former Governor Cuomo, Mamdani trails by a substantial 15 percentage points, with Cuomo garnering 50% to Mamdani’s 35%.
Dritan Nesho, CEO of HarrisX, commented on the findings, stating, “These numbers show a volatile race still taking shape. While the progressive base is fueling Mamdani’s rise, Cuomo’s broad name recognition and moderate appeal make him a formidable general election challenger.”
