A volatile scene unfolded outside Gracie Mansion on Saturday afternoon as an anti-Islam demonstration and a left-wing counter-protest clashed, resulting in six arrests and the deployment of suspected improvised explosive devices by the counter-protesters.
The initial protest, billed as “Stop the Islamic takeover of New York City,” was organized by Jake Lang, a far-right influencer and pardoned January 6 rioter. Deliberately timed during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, the provocative gathering drew roughly 20 participants. In a move designed to offend religious sensibilities, the demonstrators roasted a pig – an animal anathema to the Muslim faith – outside the mayoral residence.
In response, a larger counter-protest numbering roughly 125 people gathered under the banner “Run the Nazis out of New York City, Stand Against Hate.”
Tensions between the two factions quickly boiled over. Shortly after noon, an individual from the initial right-wing protest was arrested for deploying pepper spray against the opposing crowd.
However, the violence escalated significantly roughly twenty minutes later when a counter-protester, identified by police as 18-year-old Emir Balat, lit and hurled an incendiary device near the protest area.
According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, witnesses reported seeing smoke and flames trailing the object as it flew through the air, ultimately striking a barrier and extinguishing itself before it could fully detonate.
Balat and another counter-protester, 19-year-old Ibrahim Nikk, were subsequently arrested. The NYPD Bomb Squad recovered two devices at the scene, which were described as jars wrapped in black tape and packed with nuts, bolts, screws, and a hobby fuse. Authorities are currently conducting tests to determine whether the items were fully functioning explosives or hoaxes.
Notably, despite the highly inflammatory nature of the right-wing demonstration, the anti-Islam protesters did not deploy or utilize explosive devices, nor did they threaten Mamdani or his wife .The physical escalation involving the suspected nail bombs came entirely from the left-wing counter-protesters.
Following the incident, Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s press secretary, Joe Calvello, issued a statement forcefully condemning the right-wing gathering. Calvello called the demonstration “despicable and Islamophobic,” adding that “the events are a stark reminder of the threats they both face regularly.” He did not condemn the violent counter-protestors.
Yet, to many observers, the administration’s statement framing the mayor and his wife as the primary targets of the day’s violence rang false. While the anti-Islam protest was offensive, the only potentially lethal threats deployed at the scene were thrown by the left-wing counter-protesters who had ostensibly gathered to oppose the hate speech.
Three additional individuals were arrested at the scene for disorderly conduct and obstructing traffic. No injuries were reported in the clash.
