Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to land soon in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, for a diplomatic visit focused on two key issues: integrating Azerbaijan into the Abraham Accords and mediating between Jerusalem and Ankara amid disagreements over developments in Syria.
In recent months, reports have indicated that Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar have shown interest in expanding the Abraham Accords to include countries outside the Sunni world. Azerbaijan, a secular state with a Shiite Muslim majority, is seen as a natural partner for such a move. The strategic ties between Jerusalem and Baku—particularly in the areas of security, energy, and intelligence—have been ongoing for decades.
In March 2025, political officials in Jerusalem praised Baku as a model for regional cooperation. Netanyahu described the relationship as “unique,” emphasizing Azerbaijan’s contribution to the Muslim world.
Foreign Minister Sa’ar noted that including Azerbaijan in the accords would send a clear message of united resistance to Iranian influence. Media reports characterized the tightening bond between Israel and Azerbaijan as a source of concern for Iran, especially given the geographical proximity between the two countries.
