President Donald Trump granted full clemency to R’ Yaakov Chaim Deutsch of Williamsburg on Thursday, ending a prison term that supporters and legal advocates have long decried as unjust and excessive.

The Tzedek Association, an advocacy group instrumental in the case, confirmed the news. According to the organization, the notification came directly via a personal phone call from the White House to Rabbi Moshe Margaretten, President of the Tzedek Association.

A team is already en route to pick up Deutsch from Ottisville prison to be reunited with his family after serving nearly 22 months, Tzedek tells Belaaz.

While the clemency is being celebrated as a victory for justice, the case has also drawn attention due to disturbing allegations regarding the conduct of the sentencing judge.

Speaking to Belaaz, a spokesperson for the Tzedek Association disclosed that the judge presiding over Deutsch’s trial in Connecticut had made racially charged remarks during the proceedings. The spokesperson alleged that the judge stated, “there are too many white landlords in Connecticut,” a comment that advocates point to as evidence of potential bias that may have influenced the severity of the sentencing.

Tzedek’s legal team consisted of many lawyers who took on the case without pay.

Deutsch was sentenced to 62 months in prison, a term that far exceeded the guidelines recommended by the prosecution. Prosecutors had originally asked for a sentence of up to 18 months, making the judge’s decision to impose a sentence nearly three and a half times that length a focal point of the Tzedek Association’s advocacy.

Pictures of Deutsch that were taken after his return home were shared exclusively with Belaaz.

In a statement released following the White House call, the Tzedek Association described the event as an “unforgettable moment of justice, compassion, and light.”
“R’ Yaakov Chaim… is now on his way home and reunited with his beloved family,” the statement read. The organization credited the outcome to “tireless and heartfelt advocacy” and “deep Siyata Dishmaya,” noting that the news has brought “true simcha to Klal Yisroel.”

In a follow-up statement, shared with Belaaz, the organization wrote: “Tzedek Association welcomes and sincerely thanks President Donald J. Trump for commuting the sentence of Jacob Deutsch, bringing long-overdue correction to a deeply disproportionate outcome.Mr. Deutsch received an extreme sentence in a non-violent matter involving no financial loss and no restitution obligation-exceeding by threefold even what federal prosecutors recommended. The President’s action restores balance, reunites a family, and underscores the vital role of mercy in the administration of justice.”

Rabbi Margaretten, in a statement shared with Belaaz, stated: “This decision reflects leadership guided by conscience. President Trump showed that justice requires the humility to recognize excess and the resolve to correct it. We are grateful to the President, to Alice Johnson, to the Department of Justice, and to those throughout the administration who approached this case with seriousness and compassion.”

The statement concluded with a powerful message summarizing the relief felt by the community: “This is light breaking through darkness, justice revealed, and hope restored.”
