Federal prosecutors announced on Thursday their plan to pursue the death penalty against Luigi Mangione, who allegedly murdered UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last year.
The decision follows Attorney General Pam Bondi’s instructions to prosecutors earlier this month.
Mangione was subsequently charged on a federal level for crimes, including murder involving a firearm, which qualifies him for capital punishment.
The Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office made this declaration on Thursday, preceding Mangione’s arraignment set for Friday.
Facing both federal and state-level indictments, Mangione pleaded not guilty to accusations of murder and terrorism in New York City. Regarding the federal allegations of murder and stalking, Mangione has not yet entered a plea.
The shooting occurred on December 4, when Thompson was attacked outside of a hotel in midtown Manhattan while visiting the city.
After an extensive manhunt lasting several days, Mangione was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on unrelated charges.
On Thursday, a New York grand jury indicted Luigi Mangione on four federal counts, including murder with a firearm, which could render him eligible for the death penalty.
