For the second consecutive day, large crowds of Palestinians in northern Gaza rallied against Hamas on Wednesday, demanding an end to the ongoing war with Israel.
As reported by The Guardian, the demonstrations—now numbering in the thousands, an increase from the previous day’s hundreds—are the largest of their kind since the October 7 attack. Given Hamas’ history of violently suppressing dissent, such protests are rare.
One demonstration, with hundreds of participants, stretched from Beit Lahia to Deir al-Balah, while another in Nuseirat saw thousands chanting, “Hamas get out!”
Protesters also criticized Al Jazeera News for its sympathetic stance toward Hamas, chanting, “No, no to Al Jazeera, the people are the truth.” A banner in Shejaiya declared: “Hamas does not represent us.”
Social media videos captured predominantly male demonstrators in Beit Lahia shouting, “Hamas out” and “Hamas terrorists.” The unrest broke out near the Indonesian hospital, shortly after the IDF resumed military operations against Hamas following a temporary ceasefire.
Some carried signs demanding, “Stop the war” and “We want to live in peace.” Reports indicate the protests were organized anonymously through social media.
“I don’t know who organized it,” one protester told AFP. “I joined to send a message from the people: Enough with this war.” He also alleged that “Hamas security forces in civilian clothes [were] breaking up the protest.”
Another demonstrator, identified as Majdi, stated that the people of Gaza had reached their limit.
Additional footage from Jabalia showed protesters burning tires while chanting, “We want to eat.”
One Gaza resident recorded on camera declared: “We must end Hamas. They are not the resistance—the people are. Meanwhile, Hamas leaders live comfortably abroad.”
