Freed hostage Liri Albag had to go through another detention, for an hour, after she landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Sunday.
Officials relied on an outdated computer system to conclude that Albag was still being held by Hamas, and that an imposter was using her name at JFK.
“It appeared in their system that she was still captive, they hadn’t updated their computers,” her father, Eli Albag, said. “They were afraid someone [else] was entering the U.S. using her name.”
“Liri isn’t stressed,” he added.
“It wasn’t pleasant — but it’s over.”
Israeli officials, fearing that her detention at the airport would further traumatize Liri, acted quickly to get her released —for a second time.
“We’ve arrived at our hotel, and everything’s okay,” her father said. “It’s behind us now.”
Albag had been a surveillance soldier on the Gaza border on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists overtook the Nahal Oz military base, where she was stationed, and took her captive.
She was released by Hamas in February along with four others as part of a casefire deal that eventually didn’t hold.
