Israel is expected to begin its planned offensive on Gaza City in mid-September, roughly two weeks after the latest group of reservists reports for duty on September 2, according to a Channel 12 report.
The network said around one million Palestinians currently in Gaza City will be instructed to evacuate as early as Sunday.
Channel 12 added that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and other political leaders want the operation launched quickly, while the IDF prefers first to secure the safety of hostages and soldiers, evacuate civilians, and ensure the campaign has international backing.
Israeli officials cited by the outlet stressed urgency in rescuing the hostages, describing their condition as dire. They noted there are no major disagreements between Israel and Hamas on a ceasefire-hostage arrangement but cautioned that “it all depends on Netanyahu.” One source remarked, “There are no magic solutions. If [we] want to bring back the hostages [we] can do that now.”
Hamas recently announced it had accepted a partial deal Israel previously supported, but Netanyahu has pledged to continue the Gaza City campaign and only negotiate for an agreement covering all hostages. A source told Channel 12 that a partial deal was never seriously considered, with Israel pursuing only a comprehensive two-stage agreement.
Despite the deadlock, Israel is expected to send representatives to renewed hostage-ceasefire talks in the coming days. Discussions are already underway to finalize the location and timing, after negotiations in Doha collapsed last month when Israel and the U.S. recalled their envoys.
Channel 12 reported that the talks will not take place in Doha or Cairo, the previous venues, though the alternative site has not yet been determined.
Israeli officials believe the looming offensive in Gaza City is adding pressure on Hamas, potentially pushing the group to show more flexibility in negotiations.
The report also said Netanyahu intends to rename the upcoming campaign “Operation Iron Fist,” replacing the title “Gideon’s Chariots 2,” which referenced the May offensive.
Channel 12 added that Netanyahu has already referred to the operation as Iron Fist in recent consultations.
