The United States has reportedly told Israel it must pay for and take responsibility for a large-scale operation to clear rubble across the Gaza Strip, Ynet reports, citing a senior Israeli official.

According to the report, Israel has agreed to the American request, with the projected cost reaching as high as one billion shekels.

The Prime Minister’s Office has not responded to requests for comment.

The Wall Street Journal recently noted that Gaza contains an estimated 68 million tons of debris, based on figures from the UN Development Program.

Earlier in the week, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed Abdulrahman Al Thani said his country would not finance Gaza’s reconstruction. “We are not the ones who are going to write the check to rebuild what others destroyed,” Al Thani said during an onstage interview at the Doha Forum. “When you are talking about Gaza, Israel flattened this land.”

Ynet also reports that US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu next week in an effort to persuade Israel to permit Turkish troops in Gaza; a proposal Israel continues to reject.

The senior Israeli official told the outlet that recent US discussions with Israel have centered more on reconstruction than on disarming Hamas. According to the official, Netanyahu has emphasized in private talks that Israeli forces will ultimately be tasked with that responsibility.
