Israel is weighing the closure of the British and French consulates in Jerusalem in retaliation for their governments’ recognition of a Palestinian state, Channel 12 reported on Thursday.

Channel 12 journalist Amit Segal said: “Israel is considering closing the British and French consulates in Jerusalem in retaliation for their recognition of a Palestinian state.”

“And yes, this is a big deal, because if Israel shuts these consulates and expels its diplomats, don’t be shocked if Paris and London send Israeli diplomats packing too.”

“But don’t get too excited. Israel is not closing the official French and British embassies to the Jewish state, which sit in Tel Aviv.”

“So, what exactly are we talking about? Under the Ottoman Empire — and long before Israel gained independence — Paris and London set up consulates in East Jerusalem. As a result, they don’t exactly recognize the Jewish state. What do I mean? They were established as consulates in the city of Jerusalem, not in the Israeli capital, and have held that stance ever since, in a not so subtle dig to Israel that not only do they refuse to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, but that they view East Jerusalem as the future capital of a Palestinian state.”

The diplomatic tension follows French President Emmanuel Macron’s decision, together with the leaders of Luxembourg, Malta and Monaco, to formally recognize a Palestinian state during a summit in New York earlier this week. The move came after the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Portugal announced similar recognitions on Sept. 21.

In Jerusalem, lawmaker Dan Illouz (Likud) escalated the protest by setting up an office outside the French Consulate. “The recognition of a Palestinian state must be answered on two fronts: by applying Israeli sovereignty in Judea and Samaria—to show the world that this land is ours and that terror carries a price, not a prize—and by immediately shutting down the foreign consulates in Jerusalem that have become de facto embassies for a fictitious state and hubs of anti-Israel propaganda,” Illouz said in a statement.

“The time for ambiguity is over: Jerusalem is Israel’s eternal capital,” Illouz added.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu also condemned the recognitions as a “shameful surrender,” insisting that they would have no effect on Israel’s stance. “A Palestinian state will not be established,” Netanyahu declared.
