Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly anticipating the failure of ongoing nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran, hoping that then a disappointed President Donald Trump will authorize a military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, according to an Israeli source cited by Axios reporter Barak Ravid. The source indicated that Netanyahu is preparing for a swift strike if the talks collapse.
Meanwhile, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff is set to travel to Rome on Friday for a fifth round of nuclear talks with Iran, the Jerusalem Post reports. The negotiations aim to curb Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for U.S. sanctions relief. Iran insists on maintaining its uranium enrichment rights, while U.S. hawks, including some in the Trump administration, push for complete dismantlement.
The talks, which began in April, have seen mixed signals. U.S. Envoy Witkoff previously suggested Iran could retain limited enrichment capabilities, but recently hardened his stance, stating that enrichment is a “clear red line” to prevent weaponization. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected this demand, emphasizing Iran’s right to enrich uranium under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
