A new report shed light on how famed Israeli spy Eli Cohen’s archive made its way to Israel. According to i24 News, at the beginning of May, an Israeli helicopter landed in the southern Syrian city of Sweida, where it picked up the archive. This operation was carried out with the direct involvement of a high-ranking Syrian security officer from the area.

A Syrian source told the outlet that the event occurred on May 2, and explained, “the helicopter brought Eli Cohen’s archive, as a signal from the government and as a gesture from Syrian President Al-Julani to Israel and the United States.” The source further pointed out that utilizing a helicopter allowed the mission to avoid crossing Jordanian or Lebanese airspace.

On the same day, media reports suggested that Israel had delivered humanitarian aid to the Druze community. However, it now appears this aid was actually a cover story used to conceal the archive’s extraction. According to the Syrian insider, this move is part of a larger diplomatic thaw involving Syria, Israel, and the U.S., with behind-the-scenes negotiations advancing more significantly than previously known.
