The US may be shifting its stance on a key sticking point in the ongoing Gaza negotiations, according to a Saturday report from Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed.
The Trump administration is considering dropping its insistence that Hamas terrorists disarm as a precondition for a ceasefire and the return of hostages, the report indicated. Instead, U.S. officials have shown openness to a framework that delays the disarmament issue until after a truce is in place.
An Egyptian source told the newspaper that U.S. negotiators now believe that it isn’t practical to eliminate terror leaders in Gaza, or relocate terrorists, as potential host countries have not agreed to accept them.
Kan reported that American negotiators are demanding that all Israeli hostages, both living and murdered, be released at once. Moreover, individuals close to President Donald Trump, who are currently involved in the discussions, reportedly believe that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s military pressure strategy has failed. This reassessment came after American intelligence revealed that the lives of three hostages were in immediate danger. The intelligence is said to have significantly influenced the evolving U.S. position.
An Egyptian official noted that there is “some optimism among the mediators” about reaching a comprehensive agreement in the near future. This hopeful outlook is tied to Hamas’ reported readiness to release all hostages in a single action and the potential for acceptable compromises on the disarmament of Hamas and the relocation of its terrorists, once a broader deal is secured.
