Following President Donald Trump’s tour of the Arab world last week — notably skipping Israel in stark contrast to his first-term visit — efforts were made over the weekend by officials in both Jerusalem and Washington to arrange a brief visit to Jerusalem by Vice President JD Vance.
Ultimately, the visit was called off. While the White House officially cited “a scheduling conflict” as the reason for Vance’s return from Italy — where he had attended the new Pope’s coronation — a deeper and political explanation has now come to light.
A U.S. official tells Walla reporter Barak Ravid that Vice President Vance opted not to visit Israel, citing concerns that a visit at this time could be interpreted — by both Israel and regional actors — as a green light from Washington for the IDF’s continued military action in Gaza.
The official said that Vance and his team believed a hostage and ceasefire agreement was near, making the timing suitable for a visit. However, by Sunday, with no deal in sight, Vance chose to cancel the trip Israel.
