Democrat Sam Sutton scored a landslide victory – more than twice the amount of votes as his opponent, Republican attorney Nachman Caller – in a Tuesday special election to fill a NY State Senate seat left vacant by former Senator Simcha Felder.

Sutton, an Orthodox Sephardic community figure, defeated Caller, who is also Orthodox, by a vast margin of 66% to 32%.

The seat that was up for grabs, District 22, includes large parts of Midwood, Boro Park, Marine Park, Madison, Sheepshead Bay and Gravesend. The District, with a large Orthodox Jewish population, supported President Donald Trump in the 2024 election eith over 76% voting for the Republican.

Felder left the Senate after serving 12 years in office to replace Kalman Yeger on the NYC City Council, when the latter won election to the State Assembly. Felder had previously served on the Council from 2002 through 2010.
