For the second time in less than a week, a mild earthquake was felt in the New York City area, the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed Tuesday.
The latest tremor, measuring 2.7 in magnitude, struck at 12:11 p.m. about 2 kilometers southwest of Hillsdale, New Jersey — approximately 30 miles from Midtown Manhattan.
Just days earlier, on Saturday, a slightly stronger 3.0 magnitude quake occurred in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, located less than 8 miles west of Central Park.
Tuesday’s quake was reported in parts of Westchester County, but no damage has been reported so far.
New York City Emergency Management issued a statement saying it is “monitoring for impacts and coordinating with agency partners.”
“No major impacts reported at this time,” the agency added. “Updates will follow if conditions change.”
While both of this week’s tremors were relatively weak, they follow a stronger 4.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Tewksbury, New Jersey, in 2024 — a more significant event felt throughout the region.
Although quakes in the 3.0 range are rarely strong enough to cause damage, they remain unusual for the Northeastern U.S.
