Sen. John Fetterman called on the Trump administration to abandon nuclear negotiations with Iran and instead launch military strikes against the country’s nuclear facilities, urging President Donald Trump to “waste” the sites. The Pennsylvania Democrat argued that further talks are futile as the administration prepares for a third round of discussions with Iranian officials this Saturday to address dismantling Tehran’s nuclear program and averting military conflict.
“You’re never going to be able to negotiate with that kind of regime that has been destabilizing the region for decades, Fetterman told the Washington Free Beacon, insisting the U.S. has a critical opportunity to “strike and destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities.” He dismissed concerns from foreign policy analysts who warn that military action could spark a broader regional war, labeling such experts as consistently wrong.
Fetterman downplayed threats from Iranian terrorism proxies, stating Hezbollah “couldn’t fight,” Hamas consists of “tunnel rats with junkie rockets in the back of a Toyota truck,” and the Houthis have been effectively neutralized. He emphasized that Iran’s nuclear facilities are “clearly only for weapons” and criticized Trump for negotiating with what he termed a “diseased regime.”
The remarks come as the Trump administration races against a self-imposed two-month deadline to finalize a deal, with technical teams set to meet in Rome on Saturday. Trump has previously threatened military action if diplomacy fails, including potential coordination with Israel. Fetterman, a staunch Israel ally who recently met Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, argued that “the negotiations should be comprised of 30,000-pound bombs and the IDF.”
