In a rarity, two senior Hamas terrorist commanders, one of whom participated in the Oct. 7 massacre, surrendered and were arrested by IDF forces during an operation in Rafah in recent weeks, the military reported Monday.
The operation was carried out by Brigade 188 under the command of Division 36 in the Shabura neighborhood. One arrested commander, Yusef Mahmad Mershad Kadi, participated in the Oct. 7 massacre and played a role in holding several Israeli hostages. The other, Muhmad Miruan Mahmoud Zehrav, was a member of Hamas’ sniping unit. Several knives were found on the terrorists at the time of arrest.
Following the arrest, the Shin Bet’s interrogation of the terrorists yielded valuable intelligence about the location of significant terror infrastructure in the area.
In the weeks since, the IDF completed its encirclement of Rafah. Operations in the region continue and are expected to expand into additional neighborhoods.
So far, forces from the 188th Brigade Combat Team have located and destroyed dozens of weapons caches and terrorist infrastructure sites, and have eliminated numerous terrorists.
The IDF Spokesperson’s Office stated: “IDF and Shin Bet forces will continue to operate against the terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip in order to protect the citizens of the State of Israel.”
