After European countries promised last week to recognize Palestinian state, Ghazi Hamed, a senior Hamas figure, appeared on Al Jazeera’s “Al-Bayt” program where he lashed out at Israel and the United States, while openly praising the massacre carried out by Hamas on October 7.
Hamed unequivocally declared that Hamas would never relinquish its arms. “Hamas is not going to hand over its weapons or even a single bullet,” he said. The group’s weapons, he added, would remain “as long as the occupation is on Palestinian land”—a phrase referring to the entire territory of the State of Israel.
His comments came shortly after Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff spoke publicly at Kidnappers’ Square in Tel Aviv, where he met with families of hostages held by Hamas. “Hamas is ready to disarm, but we need to make sure they do it,” Witkoff said. “Several Arab governments are now demanding that Hamas disarm, so we are very, very close to a solution that will allow us to end the war.”
Hamed disputed that claim, instead accusing Israel of blocking a full ceasefire arrangement. “The Hamas organization has always supported a full deal, not a partial one, but Israel is the one that refused it out of the desire that through partial deals it could renew the war,” he said, according to Kan 11. “We think a full deal is the best way to end the war, but whether Israel is interested in it is the question, since Israel is interested in renewing the fighting.”
Currently residing in Qatar, Hamed also claimed that recent diplomatic efforts to recognize a Palestinian state were a direct consequence of Hamas’s October 7 attack. He denounced Palestinian Authority Chairman Abu Mazen for supporting a demilitarized Palestinian state, saying, “His words about a disarmed Palestinian state are shameful, and are not worthy of the sacrifices of our people.”
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar condemned Hamed’s remarks. “A senior Hamas official thanks France, Britain and Canada for recognizing a Palestinian state and says that the initiative of several countries to recognize a Palestinian state is one of the fruits of October 7,” Sa’ar noted.
