The body of Meny Godard Hy’d, a 73-year-old resident of Kibbutz Be’eri who was murdered on October 7, 2023, has been returned from the Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Forces announced Thursday.
Military representatives notified the Godard family after forensic experts at the Abu Kabir forensic institute in Tel Aviv completed the identification.
Godard was murdered alongside his wife, Ayelet, 63, when Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists attacked their kibbutz. His body was then abducted to Gaza by the Hamas-allied terror group.
In a joint statement, Hamas and PIJ said the body had been located in the Khan Younis area of southern Gaza on Thursday. Footage aired by Al Jazeera showed Hamas members placing a photo of one of the hostages on the body bag during the recovery.
IDF troops brought the casket out of the Gaza Strip, where they held a short ceremony led by IDF Chief Rabbi Brig. Gen. Eyal Krim, saluting the casket. It was then escorted by police to the Abu Kabir institute for identification.
The recovery comes after troops in March recovered findings belonging to Godard at an Islamic Jihad post in southern Gaza’s Rafah. Those findings were identified in Israel, but his body remained held in the Strip.
The Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement sharing in the “deep sorrow of the Godard family and of all the families of the fallen hostages.”
The PMO stated that Israel is “determined, committed, and working tirelessly” to bring back the remaining slain hostages for burial, adding that Hamas is “required to fulfill its commitments to the mediators and return them as part of the implementation of the agreement.”
The couple is survived by their children, Mor, Gal, Bar, and Goni, as well as a number of grandchildren and several siblings.
With Godard’s return, the bodies of three slain hostages remain held in Gaza: Israelis Master Sgt. Ran Gvili and Dror Or, and Thai national Sudthisak Rinthalak.
