Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich acknowledged on Wednesday that he is now backing the transfer of millions of shekels in Israeli funds to support humanitarian aid efforts in Gaza, a notable reversal from his earlier firm opposition to such assistance.

In an interview with the Kan public broadcaster, Smotrich insisted that the money should not be seen as aid but rather as a strategic tool. “It’s not money for humanitarian aid, it’s money to win the war. Had we controlled the humanitarian aid to Gaza we would have won the war a while ago,” he said.

Smotrich suggested that reallocating resources from combat to logistics could be a more effective approach, saying it would be better to divert funding from an IDF division and instead support American companies overseeing aid operations. “This is money that’s inseparable from the war effect,” he explained.

The finance minister had previously taken a hardline stance, even threatening to leave the coalition when Israel decided to ease restrictions on aid entering Gaza.

Earlier in the year, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid accused the government of quietly channeling humanitarian support into Gaza via two foreign shell companies; an alleged tactic to avoid political fallout among the prime minister’s right-wing allies.
