Somaliland President Heads to Washington in Historic Bid for U.S. Recognition

Somaliland’s President, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, is expected to travel to Washington in the coming days for his first official visit to the United States since assuming office. The trip comes several months after Israel became the first United Nations member state to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent country.

The planned visit is being viewed as a significant development in Somaliland’s long-running campaign to secure wider international recognition. The territory broke away from Somalia in 1991 and has operated independently for decades, maintaining its own government and institutions despite lacking broad diplomatic recognition.

Israel formally recognized Somaliland in December 2025, opening the door to rapidly expanding relations between the two sides. In June, President Abdullahi traveled to Israel in a landmark visit, where he met with President Isaac Herzog and Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana.

Somaliland has also opened an embassy in Jerusalem, further underscoring its growing diplomatic ties with Israel.

Despite Israel’s recognition, the possibility of Washington following suit remains uncertain. Following the Israeli announcement, Donald Trump said he was not prepared to recognize Somaliland immediately and wanted to examine the issue before making a decision. President Abdullahi’s upcoming Washington visit could give Hargeisa an opportunity to make its case directly to U.S. officials and advocate for American recognition.

Somaliland’s geographic position makes it particularly important from a strategic perspective. Located in the Horn of Africa near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and major Red Sea shipping routes, the territory occupies a position of potential significance for U.S. and regional security interests.

Somaliland and Israel have already signaled plans to deepen cooperation across a range of sectors, including security, agriculture, water management, healthcare and economic development. A successful diplomatic outreach to Washington could further elevate Somaliland’s international profile and strengthen its campaign for formal recognition.
