British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to release a statement on Sunday confirming that the United Kingdom will formally recognize a Palestinian state, according to British media. The move follows a French-led initiative encouraging countries to coordinate such declarations at the UN General Assembly.
Reports indicate that Starmer delayed the announcement until after US President Donald Trump’s visit to Britain, as the two leaders differ sharply on this matter. However, Starmer wants the message public before flying to New York for the General Assembly.
Back in July, Starmer pledged that his government would recognize a Palestinian state if Israel failed to meet international demands to reach a ceasefire in Gaza, outline a long-term plan for the enclave, and allow the steady flow of humanitarian supplies and goods.
Starmer is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Friday, speaking four slots after Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.
