Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik announced her bid for New York governor on early Friday morning, challenging Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul in the 2026 race. In a statement, Stefanik criticized Hochul, calling her “the Worst Governor in America” and highlighting New York’s high costs and crime rates.
She pledged to make the state “affordable and safe for all,” with a platform including tax cuts and law enforcement support, and called for unity across parties to “save our state.” Stefanik has raised over $13 million and is endorsed by the state GOP.
This announcement follows Zohran Mamdani’s recent win as New York’s first Muslim mayor, focusing on affordability. Stefanik aims to reverse Hochul’s “failed policies,” despite Hochul’s campaign labeling her a Trump-aligned “extremist.”
