Police confirmed on Wednesday that the surviving terrorist in the devastating Islamic terror attack at a Bondi Beach Chanukah celebration has been formally charged with murder, grievous bodily harm, and terrorism offenses.
The horrific shooting on Sunday resulted in the tragic deaths of 15 people, including two Chabad shluchim, a couple which tried to disarm the terrorists, a 10-year-old girl, and a Holocaust survivor.
Authorities identified the attackers as 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his son, Naveed Akram, 24, of Pakistani origin. While the elder gunman died at the scene after being shot by officers, the younger suspect was wounded and transported to a hospital. Police stated that the pair appeared to be driven by antisemitic hatred inspired by the Islamic State.
Naveed Akram has been charged with 59 counts, including one count of terrorism and 15 counts of murder.
According to Mal Lanyon, the police commissioner for the state of New South Wales, the living suspect remained in a coma until Tuesday afternoon.
As the legal process begins, the Jewish community is grappling with the magnitude of the loss.
