Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa revealed on Sunday evening that “advanced talks” are taking place between Damascus and Jerusalem toward a security agreement. He shared the update during a meeting with Arab media representatives.
Nadim Koteich, director of Sky News Arabia, reported that al-Sharaa said the prospective deal would be structured around the 1974 disengagement line separating Israel and Syria.
Al-Sharaa explained that his goal is to renew the ceasefire with Israel and establish “security arrangements” that would safeguard Syria’s sovereignty. He added that these steps could serve as a foundation for future initiatives and possible agreements.
However, the Syrian leader made it clear that he does not currently view a full peace treaty with Israel as realistic.
“If a peace agreement serves the interests of Syria and the Syrian people, I will not hesitate to choose that option,” he stated.
His remarks come after Independent Arabia, a Saudi-owned newspaper, reported last week that Israel and Syria are expected to sign a U.S.-mediated security agreement on September 25.
Sources familiar with the matter said the deal would focus on reducing friction between Jerusalem and Damascus, though a broader peace accord is not anticipated “in the near future.”
Just days earlier, Syria’s state news agency disclosed that Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani had met in Paris with an Israeli delegation reportedly led by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer.
According to that report, the talks were facilitated by Washington and focused on strengthening stability in southern Syria and the broader region.
Key issues on the table included border de-escalation, upholding non-interference in Syria’s internal affairs, regional stability, oversight of the ceasefire in the Druze Mountain area, and renewing the 1974 disengagement agreement.
