Negotiations between Israel and Syria on a potential security agreement have made major progress in recent weeks and could soon lead to a signing, according to a Syrian source close to President Ahmed Al-Sharaa who spoke with i24NEWS on Thursday.
The source said the recent momentum is largely due to intensive involvement by U.S. President Trump. The developing agreement is expected to include a diplomatic annex and may be signed at a senior-level meeting between Syrian and Israeli officials in a European country in the near future.
According to the Syrian source, a direct signing between Al-Sharaa and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is also being considered and has not been ruled out.
Last month, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani said Damascus anticipates reaching a security arrangement with Israel by the end of the year, based on the 1974 armistice agreement with minor modifications and without buffer zones, stressing that this would be achieved “but not at any cost.”
Israel has publicly rejected Syria’s demand for a full Israeli withdrawal from all positions taken by the IDF in Syria following the collapse of the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad.
Israeli sources say the IDF would only pull back from some of the nine locations it currently controls in Syrian territory as part of a comprehensive peace agreement with Syria, not merely a limited security deal.
