Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport, Romania.
Negotiations between Israel and Moldova over a temporary terminal for Uman travelers collapsed after Chisinau demanded to keep all equipment Israel would supply. Israel is now weighing an alternative flight path through Romania ahead of the upcoming Rosh Hashanah event at the kever of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov.
Due to the war in Ukraine, direct flights to Uman are impossible. Israel had been working on a solution through neighboring Moldova. A meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office with former minister R. Meir Porush resulted in Israel agreeing to finance a temporary terminal in Chisinau to handle approximately 50 outgoing and 50 return flights.
Moldova requested 8 million shekels to prepare a parking lot as a makeshift terminal and demanded staffing of 90 Israeli aviation security personnel, 24 police officers, and 50 interpreters. Israel was also asked to provide tents, signage, baggage equipment, security cameras, communication systems, firefighting gear, air conditioning, and toilets.
The dispute erupted when Moldova insisted on keeping all the supplied equipment at the end of the operation, without committing to reuse it next year for Uman passengers.
With talks at a standstill, Israel is now considering shifting flights through Romania. Unlike Moldova, Romania is not requiring a temporary terminal or equipment, only interpreters to assist passengers.
However, the Romanian option presents difficulties. Pilgrims would face a long overland journey after landing, and they would still need to pass through Moldova on their way to Ukraine, where officials may create obstacles at the border.
