A Jewish teacher was attacked near a Jewish school in Miami Beach on Wednesday.

Soon after the assault, 33-year-old Slemons Graves was arrested, and is facing hate-crime charges after directing an antisemitic slur at a woman, assaulting her, and stealing her cellphone, Miami Beach police report. His formal charges were strong-arm robbery and battery with prejudice.

Police say the suspect approached the victim on Tuesday after she parked her vehicle down the street from the Lehrman Community Day School, located along the 500 block of 77th Street. As she began to walk toward the school, the suspect spat in her face and called her a “dirty Jew.” He then slapped the teacher on the left side of the head before snatching her cellphone and repeatedly throwing it to the ground, shattering it.

This incident comes amid a series of antisemitic attacks across Florida. Recently, a fire at Chabad of Charlotte County in Punta Gorda is being investigated as a potential arson and hate crime. In Hallandale Beach, antisemitic graffiti appeared repeatedly near a local Chabad, prompting a police investigation and a reward for information. In Ponte Vedra Beach, Jewish teenagers were assaulted with a handgun and threatened with antisemitic slurs, with the perpetrator later sentenced to prison.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, Florida recorded 353 antisemitic incidents in 2024, with Palm Beach County consistently leading the state in reported attacks. Many of these incidents include assaults, harassment, vandalism, and threats, often tied to tensions surrounding the Israel–Gaza conflict.

Austin Parcels, Manager of Research and Advocacy at B’nai Brith Canada, said that incidents like the Miami Beach attack highlight the real dangers Jewish communities face: “Portraying Jewish institutions or individuals as targets because of ties to Israel is inciting and dangerous,” he said.

Authorities continue to investigate the Miami Beach incident and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
