The name Yahya, belonging to the Hamas leader who orchestrated the October 7 atrocities, saw the most dramatic rise in popularity among baby boy names in the United Kingdom last year, according to new government data.
The British Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that Yahya ranked as the 93rd most common name for boys in 2024, with 583 newborns receiving the name.
That figure marked a jump of 33 places from the previous year’s rankings; more than any other boy’s name during the same period.
Meanwhile, the name Muhammad retained its spot as the most popular boy’s name in the UK for a second consecutive year. Variants of the name also remained prominent, with Mohammed in 21st place and Mohammad in 53rd.
