As devastating flash floods swept across the Texas Hill Country over the holiday weekend, claiming at least 81 lives and leaving a trail of destruction, a local Jewish center has become a beacon of hope for victims and first responders.
Chabad of Boerne, established just three years ago by Rabbi Yossi and Malky Marrus, has rapidly transformed its small center into a bustling hub for aid distribution.
The Chabad house, located just a short distance from the flood’s epicenter, has mobilized a significant relief operation.
Rabbi Marrus coordinated with a team of volunteers to collect and deliver essential supplies to those impacted by the floods.
The center is actively coordinating with community partners to address the urgent needs of the community. “With the aid of Rabbi Avraham Berkowitz, Chabad of Boerne has coordinated with local elected officials and businesses to bring much-needed aid to victims, survivors and first responders,” Chabad’s Twitter page stated.
The catastrophic flooding, which began in the predawn hours of Friday, was fueled by torrential rains that caused the Guadalupe River to rise at an alarming rate, catching many residents and vacationers by surprise.
Entire homes were washed away, and numerous individuals, including children at a summer camp, remain missing. The scale of the disaster prompted a major disaster declaration for Kerr County, one of the hardest-hit areas.
