On Friday, just hours before the onset of Shabbos, the community of Tel Tzion was shaken by the blaring of sirens. A young child, playing with an electric battery near a sukkah, inadvertently sparked an explosion that ignited a fierce fire. The flames spread rapidly, engulfing an entire apartment and leaving nothing behind. Neighboring apartments also suffered partial damage, affecting four additional households.

The main apartment, completely destroyed in the blaze, was home to a family of ten, led by a respected Talmid Chacham known for living a simple life without material luxuries. The family suddenly found themselves without shelter, clothing, furniture, or food. Tragically, one child sustained severe burns and remains hospitalized, facing a long recovery.

Residents are reeling at the devastation: scorched homes, families stripped of basic necessities, and young children witnessing the destruction of their homes.

“This is a tragedy,” one of the residents in the area, who is involved in chessed work, told B’chadrei Charedim. “A widespread disaster that occurred as a result of the dangerous behavior of one small child… We are doing everything we can to help the families, and we would be happy to receive additional help from the general public. We need clothes, furniture, equipment, but above all, we need urgent financial help to allow all five families to celebrate the holiday in a reasonable manner.”

The askan added, “A massive renovation of the apartment that was particularly badly damaged will be necessary. In such cases, the plaster has to be scraped off the walls, the flooring is no longer usable, the pipes under the beams and the electrical infrastructure in the walls—everything is damaged and everything has to be restored from scratch. This involves costs of hundreds of thousands of shekels, and a very thorough renovation of the apartment. In addition, we will have to help them furnish the house, from the very basics: beds, cabinets, refrigerator, washing machine; they have nothing!”
