President Donald Trump stated Monday that there are “maybe 30” people being considered for UN Ambassador to the United Nations after he withdrew Rep. Elise Stefanik’s nomination.
One of the candidates is David Friedman, who previously served as ambassador to Israel during his first term; another is Richard Grenell, who held the position of ambassador to Germany and was also acting director of national intelligence, as potential contenders.
“I can tell you that for the replacement, we have a lot of people that have asked about it and would like to do it,” Trump told reporters. “David Friedman, Ric Grenell, and maybe 30 other people. Everyone loves that position. That’s a star-making position. And so we’ll see what happens.”
Friedman was said do be slated for a high-ranking position in the second administration. However, Trump has so far refrained from appointing him, given that the former diplomat had been critical of the president following his 2022 dinner with outspoken antisemite and Hitler admirer Kanye West.
Last week, Trump withdrew Stefanik’s nomination for the United Nations ambassador role but requested that she remain in the House, to help maintain a slim Republican majority in the chamber.
“We don’t want to take any chances, so I went to Elise and I said, ‘Elise, do you mind?’” Trump remarked last week following the announcement. “We don’t want to take any chances. It’s as simple as that. It’s basic politics. It’s politics 101. She’s very popular. She’s going to win.”
