US President Donald Trump issued mixed remarks regarding Israel’s strike in Qatar that targeted Hamas leaders a short while before the gulf state threatened Israel with possible retaliation.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote that the strike “does not advance Israel or America’s goals.” Still, he added, “eliminating Hamas, who have profited off the misery of those living in Gaza, is a worthy goal.”
“I believe this unfortunate incident could serve as an opportunity for PEACE,” Trump declared.
He explained that the US military had warned him of Israel’s planned strike in Doha. Trump said he immediately instructed US envoy Steve Witkoff to alert Qatar, “which he did, however, unfortunately, too late to stop the attack.”
“This [strike] was a decision made by Prime Minister Netanyahu, it was not a decision made by me,” Trump emphasized.
The president praised Qatar for its mediation efforts, calling the Gulf nation “a strong ally and friend of the US” and saying he “feels very badly about the location of the attack.”
Trump repeated his demand for the release of all hostages and for the war to end “NOW!”
He added that he spoke with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who told him “he wants to make peace.” Trump also said he called the emir and prime minister of Qatar, thanking them for their “support and friendship to our country.”
“I assured them that such a thing will not happen again on their soil,” Trump said, noting that he had directed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to finalize a defense cooperation agreement with Qatar.
Meanwhile, Qatari PM Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in a press conference said “We reserve the right to retaliate for these treacherous attacks… There should be retaliation from the whole region”- “Today’s attack by Israel is an act of “state terrorism.”
