US President Donald Trump announced Friday that he had directed two nuclear submarines to move into areas near Russia, citing threatening remarks from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
“I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The exchange follows heightened tensions between Trump and Medvedev, now serving as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council. Earlier this week, Trump issued an ultimatum demanding that Russia agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine within 10 days or face tariffs alongside nations that purchase its oil.
Despite Trump’s warning, Moscow has indicated no willingness to meet his ceasefire demand, instead continuing to advance its own conditions for ending the war.
On Thursday, Medvedev mocked Trump on Telegram, stating that Russia would persist with its military actions in Ukraine.
“If some words from the former president of Russia trigger such a nervous reaction from the high-and-mighty president of the United States, then Russia is doing everything right and will continue to proceed along its own path,” Medvedev posted.
He went on to taunt Trump’s earlier remarks, saying, “And about India’s and Russia’s ‘dead economies’ and ‘entering very dangerous territory’ – well, let him remember his favorite movies about *The Walking Dead*, as well as how dangerous the fabled ‘Dead Hand’ can be.”
Medvedev’s reference to the “Dead Hand” pointed to a Cold War-era Soviet automated nuclear retaliation system, which is reportedly still operational in modern Russia.
Trump’s submarine order came just days after he fired back at Medvedev over an earlier statement warning that the current escalation of threats between Washington and Moscow was edging both countries closer to direct conflict.
“Tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he’s still President, to watch his words. He’s entering very dangerous territory!,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
