President Donald Trump announced Wednesday night that he is officially designating Antifa as a terrorist organization and recommending investigations into its financial backers.
The announcement comes after stating earlier in the week that he was considering the move in the wake of the assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.
Trump had previously considered labeling the leftist group a domestic terrorist entity in 2020, during the height of the George Floyd riots and looting, in which antifa activists featured prominently among the perpetrators. At the time, a bill was introduced in the Senate by Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana.
In a statement, President Trump declared Wednesday night: “I am pleased to inform our many U.S.A. Patriots that I am designating ANTIFA, A SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER, AS A MAJOR TERRORIST ORGANIZATION. I will also be strongly recommending that those funding ANTIFA be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices.”
Antifa is not a formal organization but a loosely affiliated movement, making it challenging to apply traditional terrorist designations.
