US President Donald Trump called on Hamas terrorists to lay down its arms and release the 50 Israeli hostages it continues to hold, saying doing so would swiftly alleviate the humanitarian suffering in Gaza.
“The fastest way to end the Humanitarian Crises in Gaza is for Hamas to SURRENDER AND RELEASE THE HOSTAGES!!!” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform.
His statement came amid a series of posts addressing unrelated topics, including trade policy and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.
The announcement comes a day after a large group of Arab nations, for the first time, made a similar call to the terrorists. That group included Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and others.
Trump’s remarks coincided with plans for his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, to meet with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to discuss the Gaza conflict and the stalled negotiations over the hostages.
All three; Trump, Witkoff, and Netanyahu, have placed the blame for the breakdown in talks on Hamas’s refusal to compromise, despite ongoing mediation efforts by the US, Qatar, and Egypt. Even so, Witkoff is reportedly expected to urge Netanyahu to consider certain concessions as a way to potentially restart the diplomatic process.
